He Sees and Loves Bald Heads

God sees us and knows us so deeply that even the hairs on our head are numbered—even when we're bald!

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Luke 12:6-7 ESV)

My friend returned to work and I was surprised and excited to see her. She had gone through chemo and her return was not anticipated – at least not by me.

On her head, she wore a scarf, precisely folded and tucked to hide her bare crown. Nervous, she made a joke and went on to share with me her struggles with waiting for her eyebrows, eyelashes and hair to grow back. I listened, having no clue what to say, but encouraging her as she was so beautiful and her smile lit up the office.

It was only a matter of weeks before she finally, gingerly took off her scarf to reveal a beautiful buzz cut of stark white hair. She looked hot! I encouraged her to go without the head covering more often as she looked great and needed to show off her fierceness. A few days later, that’s exactly what she did.

Cancer does not discriminate. It hits who and when it wants. My husband is a prostate cancer survivor and I have had a run-in with skin cancer. Thankfully neither of us had to deal with chemotherapy or any truly evasive treatments, so I don’t pretend to even understand what my friend is going through. But, knowing that God sees us, and that He knows us so deeply that even the hairs on our head are numbered, gives me some peace . . . peace that we need to share! Oh how He loves us!

Father, thank You for giving us so many promises to encourage us and speak Your love into our lives. Help us to find comfort in You and to tell others of the peace that can be found in knowing You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
