He Knows My Name
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? . . . Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (John 20:15-16 ESV)
Have you ever been so lost in grief that you are almost crazed in pain? I recall getting the call that my husband had a heart attack and was in a hospital hundreds of miles away. If I could have sprouted wings and flew myself, I would have been there in minutes – my will was so focused and determined to be next to the man I loved.
Mary loved Jesus.
She had gone to the tomb probably racked with guilt for having not properly prepared His body for burial. Now she was ready to minister to the One she adored . . . but the body was not there.
I love this passage where Jesus calls her ‘woman’ and she doesn’t recognize Him but then when He says her name, she crumbles. Can’t you just see it? Feel it?
Imagine Him whispering your name as only a lover does. Full of passion and knowledge of who you are . . . ‘Nicole’ … ‘Suzanne’ … ‘Lila’ . . . Insert your own name into the passage and close your eyes. Hear Him speak your name so tenderly. Do you recognize His voice?
This is the voice of the Lover of our souls. He whispers into our grief and pain, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ Then He calls us by name as if to say, I am here, Lori. Have you forgotten who I am and my love for you? I haven’t forgotten you. I am here. Settle down, come to me, and rest.
Father, I thank You from the bottom of my heart that You poured Your love for us into Your Son. Thank You for whispering our names, calming us . . . taking away our grief and pain. Help us to be quiet and to listen to Your still, small voice. Amen
