He Answered in Power and Might

Description

What took place at Mt. Carmel foreshadowed God’s show of power and might at the garden tomb when he raised Jesus from the dead. He proved that He alone has power over death.

Hear

Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire--he is God." Then all the people said, "What you say is good” (1 Kings 18:24).

Mt. Carmel was the site of an intense standoff. The prophet Elijah was accused by Ahab of causing trouble among the people. Elijah knew better. Ahab, the king of Israel, was the real trouble maker for Israel. Ahab abandoned the Lord’s commands to follow Baal.

Elijah summoned the people of Israel, the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Ashareh to meet him at Mt. Carmel

They all showed up.

Elijah attacked their lukewarm devotion. He said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

He challenged the people and the prophets: Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire--he is God." Then all the people said, "What you say is good.” (1 Kings 18:24).

The 450 prepared their sacrifice and then began to call on Baal to answer by fire. But, as the Bible says, there was no response. “No one answered. No one paid attention.”

Nothing. No matter how they pleaded or summoned, Baal never answered. He was silent, powerless.

When Elijah said to the Lord, “Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God,” the fire of the Lord came down and immediately consumed Elijah’s sacrifice.

The one true God answered in power and might. The people experienced it in all its glory and fell down proclaiming, “The Lord – he is God”.
