Scripture: Genesis 42:1-45:15
Oh, the richness in today’s reading! We could hang out here for several days. Do you love the story of Joseph as much as I do?
I’m pained to think of the years Joseph’s brothers spent in agony over what they had done to him. For fifteen years, they lived with the burden of their deception. What a long time to carry that around.
Can you imagine suppertime around the fire back then with their father? Seeing the grief on his face; feeling the sting of the searing pain of the past? Perhaps regret welled up as the memory of Joseph’s daily check-ups came to mind. Oh, the sleepless nights.
Can you relate? Is there a haunting sin from your past that you haven’t received God’s forgiveness for yet? Whether five years, fifteen years, or a lifetime … any time is too long to carry around the burden of past sin. It brings nothing but heartache. Harboring the sins of our past casts a shadow over our future. We can easily live in the shadow of sin’s haunting rather than the light of God’s truth. Be encouraged by these truths:
My God doesn’t condemn.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (NIV)
My master is grace, not sin.
“For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.” Romans 6:14 (NIV 1984)
My Savior Jesus has set me free, therefore I am free.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 (NIV)
My old self is gone; because of Jesus Christ, I am new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV 1984)
Jesus’ forgiveness is the healing salve for the sting of our past’s pain. Today, let’s determine to believe these truths and live them so our future isn’t bogged down by shame.
