Happy Girl

Description

Hawi Esther, age 2, plays with bubbles.

Esther got a good start on life because her mother, Grace, had good medical care through her pregnancy.

Grace says that Hawi Esther has been healthy unlike her siblings who were sickly.

Grace and her husband, John, lost 2 boys to malnutrition. Grace had not been able to care for them very well. Since the family was poor as she had to work gathering reeds from Lake Victoria to make mats to sell. She had no time to be home to breastfeed the kids, so they didn’t get the nutrition they needed.

Jael Atieno, a World Vision community health volunteer, heard about the family’s suffering and came to help them recover. Grace now knows the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the child’s first six months, which gives the child good immunity.
