Happy

Description

Lori Dixon explains the difference between being happy and having joy.

A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed. (Proverbs 15:13 ESV)

There is a popular song these days that’s peppy, catchy and . . . well . . . happy. It extols the virtue of being happy, challenging all to ‘Clap your hands if you know that happiness is the truth!’

Now, I’ve got to tell you – I like this song. It makes my feet move (much to the disappointment and embarrassment of my family). But it got me to thinking about happiness versus joy. And what the Truth is.

Is happiness the truth? Well, when we know Jesus and He is Lord of our lives, there is a joy that floods our soul . . . so that’s true. But, even when we are serving Christ, bad stuff still hits our lives. I know a few Christians who are walking beside loved ones who are suffering and dying. I wouldn’t say they are exuding a great deal of happiness, yet they do have a unique form of joy. Not a gleeful, giggly joy, but a deep sense of peace in knowing that they serve a sovereign God who is in control.

Some Christian rappers redid the cover, changing the lyrics to, ‘Clap along if you feel that the Lord’s been good to you! Clap along if you know that the Good News is the Truth!’ Not typically a rapper fan, this is a great alternative! Sorry family . . . but my feet be a tappin’ and I feel a joyful dance coming on!

Father, You are the truth and Jesus does bring happiness and peace to our lives! Thank You for the assurance that Jesus has made a way for us and that we don’t walk – or dance – in our journey alone, but that You are with us each step of the way. Amen!
