Guest or Host?

Description

Under God's guidance, we can find rest and peace while trusting in Him rather than in our own plans.

Read: Proverbs 16:1 & Proverbs 16:3

When asked what made his life so enriched and peaceful, I once heard a man answer it was due to having a “happy home where Jesus was never a guest”. Sure we have all heard these types of phrases before and some of us might even brush them off as having no depth or wisdom behind it. But when I heard this one, it stuck.

The first description that comes to mind when I think of a guest is someone who had no involvement in the planning but was only invited to attend or be a part of the end result. Under that description, how often is Jesus just a guest in our decisions, plans, lives and marriages? Are we living our lives and making plans for the future, and then just asking God to come in and put His stamp of approval? In Psalm 16:1, it says, “We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer.” By making Jesus the host at the beginning of our plans rather than the guest at the end, it helps us to act God’s way and seek His guidance through the decision-making process. Under His guidance, we can find rest and peace while trusting in Him rather than in our own plans.

Jesus already has plans for our lives and marriages, so when we commit our actions to the Lord just as Psalm 16:3 says, our plans become His and they will always succeed. So between finances, arguments, children, future plans and all of the efforts of your marriage, what have you not committed to the Lord? What areas does He need to be moved off the guest list and made the host?
