Guard the Mind

When you have an ungodly desire, don’t cultivate or even tolerate it, eliminate it.

James 1:14 (NIV®)

Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

James just tells it like it is. In this passage he describes a downward progression that’s launched by our own destructive desires. All of us have desires that are ungodly, and they need to be uprooted—not defended, not explained away, not blamed on circumstance or family or the injustice of something that happened in the past. When you have an ungodly desire, don’t cultivate or even tolerate it, eliminate it. I have learned I have to be careful. If we are Christ-followers, if we are people who say we love the Lord, we should be cultivating a different set of desires than ungodly people. What we dream about, what we do with our treasure, our talent, our time, our resources, should be different than the ungodly. Those things are a reflection of our desires. Be careful, because one little evil desire will grow a forest of friends and lead you toward an end that is death. And the opposite is also true: desires that honor the Lord will multiply and lead to life and blessing.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the truth of Your Word. Even when it seems to place limitations on me I know it is because Your way leads to life and blessings beyond what I can see. Help me to guard my mind so that my desires will honor You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
