Grow In Grace
And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:15-18a ESV)
Have you ever been sitting under someone’s teaching, or perhaps reading a popular Christian book and something just doesn’t ring true? Your spirit twitches as you question a statement or a verse that was twisted or quoted out of context? I sure have and it’s happening more and more lately.
Or maybe you are just reading the Word on your own and get a bit confused as to what is being said. The Bible is full of mystery and things that are ‘hard to understand’.
Thankfully Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, tells us what to do. We are to go after Christ. We are to be growing in the grace and knowledge of Him. This is so simple, it’s often lost. When we are filled daily, afresh with the Holy Spirit, and as we keep our focus on the Gospel and His grace, any confusing theology or divisive teaching will not affect our stability. We will be firmly planted in our standing in Christ, and clinging to Him as our source of Truth.
Father, You are full of mystery, but You are not a God of confusion. Thank You for giving us a living understanding of You and Your Word through Your Holy Spirit indwelling in us. Help us to keep our heart and eyes on the simple truth of the Gospel. Amen
