Green Thumb

Seeking God and abiding in His plan for our lives produces goodness, righteousness and truth.

Read: Ephesians 5:8-14

Having grown up spending summers in the farmland of Tennessee helping my Meemaw sow seeds and break beans, one may think I'd have acquired a knack for gardening. In my case, one would be wrong. I, unfortunately, inherited no skill for keeping plants alive. In fact, I've managed to let every house plant, vegetable and flower I've ever had die.

Whether I don't allow them to get enough sun, I forget to water them or I leave them out in the cold, they all end up shriveled, fruitless and beyond saving.

Though I know the basic needs for plant survival, I've never been able to keep them bearing fruit. They need attention, nourishment and sunlight, and my obvious neglect of these necessities continuously results in failure. The Bible tells us that plants aren't the only living things that need attention, nourishment, and light, however. Ephesians 5:8-11 urges us to "live as children of the light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)" and to "have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness."

As followers of Christ, we are growing daily in our relationship with Him. Just like a plant needs light to flourish, so do we. When we live in God's light, we are able to bear the fruits of His spirit. Seeking God and abiding in His plan for our lives produces goodness, righteousness and truth. Giving attention to our developing relationship with Him and allowing His word and prayer to nurture our growth assures that we will continue to bear fruit that glorifies Him.

  • Do you see evidence of the fruits of the Spirit in your life?
