Gossip Isn't Good for You

Description

Instead of feeling better from venting, we can become embittered and participate in nonproductive talk. Ask the Lord to convict you when you are tempted to gossip.

The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts. —Proverbs 18:8 (niv)

Work had been horrendous. Today my phone wouldn’t work; other days it was the Internet or computer. I was in commission-only sales, so it was affecting my paycheck.

I’d tried to explain to tech support. They didn’t have any solutions, so I carried my complaints up the corporate ladder. When nothing got done, I resorted to “blowing off steam” with other employees.

Once home, I grabbed a couple of pickles—comfort food for me—and headed out to feed Dazzle, my black mare. Her nostrils flared, and she licked her lips. “What’s that about?” Her eyes locked on my pickle, and she batted her long lashes. I shook my head and pulled away the pickle. “Pickles aren’t good for horses.” She craned her neck. I giggled. “Okay, but you won’t like it.”

I pinched off a small piece and set it on the palm of my hand. Quickly, Dazzle snatched it. She squinted. Her eyes watered; then she spit it out. I broke out laughing. “See, I told you it wasn’t good for you.”

At that moment I heard, And gossip isn’t good for you. I took a deep breath. My blowing off steam had blossomed into nonproductive talk that only served to rehash problems. Instead of feeling better from venting, I was becoming embittered.

I had a choice to make: Either get another job or make the best of it where I was.

Lord, when I’m tempted to gossip, please convict me.
