Biblical truth is very balanced. It is not only concerned about what people do, but it is also concerned about what is going on in the depths of who they are. What it assumes is that the heart is the source of activity, and if this heart is healthy the fruit that comes out of the person will be healthy.
43 "For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit; nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit.
44 "For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.
45 "The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.
46 "And why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? (Luke 6:43-46)
So life is more than activity. Instead who we are in our depths will determine what comes out of our lips. That means God is interested in is a very deep working in our hearts. Just knowing information and doing things is not acceptable. We must allow God to change who we are and that is through knowing him better and better. Character is a byproduct of what goes on in our heart’s relationship with God the Father.
