God Wants Us Confident
God the Father realizes that we are a fearful people. Often we are suspicious of the motives of others and even the motives of God. So to deal with that suspicion, God has redeemed us not with silver or gold but with the precious blood of his Son. Further, he has given us the Holy Spirit as a down payment guaranteeing our future.
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory—(Eph 1:13-14).
The word pledge in verse 14 in the Greek language means a permanently given pledge or down payment. Such a payment, or in this case the person of the Holy Spirit, is given to us permanently so that we can confidently expect that God will follow through with what he has promised. It is wonderful of him to so kindly address our fearful hearts by giving us this kind of reassurance. He has given two members of the Trinity to us, the Son and the Holy Spirit. That should win our hearts!
