God’s Power for Weary People
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:29-31)
Ever felt tired or weary? We’d be surprised if you hadn’t! Whether it is the weariness of the mother of young children at the end of the day, or the weariness of the elderly as they start the day; the weariness of the manual worker with aching limbs, or the weariness of the executive with an aching head; all of us hit times of weariness, when we have simply had enough and feel we cannot do any more or carry on any longer.
At times like that it’s good to remember that God never gets weary. That’s hard for our minds to grasp – but it’s absolutely true! Even when God rested after creation, it wasn’t because he was tired; it was simply that his work was done! God never gets weary! Isaiah put it like this: ‘Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no-one can fathom’ (Isaiah 40:28). Indeed, he is so full of energy that he ‘he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep’ (Psalm 121:4).
Well, that’s all well and good for God; but how does that affect us? Well, here’s the good news: God has promised to share his divine energy with us! We may get weary - even the youngest and most energetic of us; but as we put our trust in God each day we can know our weakness being exchanged for his strength and can soar above pressures and problems like an eagle soaring far above! All we need to do is to stop (one of the hardest things in life to do!) and to call on God’s promise of that divine energy for ourselves today! So why not do that right now?
The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. (Psalm 68:35)
