God's Amazing Forgiveness
There is no God like you. You forgive those who are guilty of sin; you don’t look at the sins of your people who are left alive. You will not stay angry for ever, because you enjoy being kind. (Micah 7:18, NCV)
Ever felt wronged by someone, and forgiven them when they asked you to do so, but then found it difficult to ‘get things back to normal’ quickly? Perhaps you had to work hard at forgetting the issue; or perhaps your feelings needed to catch up with your will; or perhaps there was a measure of reserve in the relationship, just in case they let you down again. But God is never like that! When God forgives, he forgives!
The Bible tells us, first, that God forgives freely. There is no cost and there are no conditions to receiving the forgiveness; no limits to its extent. It really is ‘the gift of God’ (Romans 6:23) - a free gift generously given, with absolutely nothing more to pay because the price has already been fully and completely paid by Christ on the cross. All we now need to do is to believe it and to make it our own in our hearts.
Second, God forgives fully. He doesn’t keep a little bit of judgment in reserve, just in case he wants to change his mind about us later. And nor does he keep a memo of our past sins, just in case he needs it. When he forgives, he forgives completely. At the cross ‘he forgave us all our sins’ (Colossians 2:13).
Third, God forgives quickly. With him, there is no delay in forgiveness, no time lapse while he thinks about it or waits to see how we get on first, no need for penance to ‘work it off’. When we truly repent, God’s forgiveness comes immediately, as the thief who was crucified with Jesus discovered when we was assured, after his repentance, that ‘today you will be with me in paradise’ (Luke 23:43).
What an amazing God we have! Make sure you are living in the good of his amazing forgiveness for yourself today.
How great is God’s love for all who worship him? Greater than the distance between heaven and earth! How far has the LORD taken our sins from us? Farther than the distance from the east to the west! (Psalm 103:11-12, CEV)
