God Loves You . . . and I’m Trying
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 ESV)
Ruth Graham had a plaque that hung in her house that read, ‘God loves you, and I’m trying’. Oh, how I love that woman and wish we could have been friends. Or better yet, neighbors! She comes off as such a real person and so full of honesty. Can you imagine walking into Billy Graham’s home and seeing that sign? Here’s a woman who knew who she was in Christ! Not perfect . . . but forgiven!
And she didn’t stop there. She also had a sign above her kitchen sink that read, ‘Divine service done here three times a day’. I’m curious to know, however, if it was Ruth or the kids who were immersed in God’s work.
Then there’s my absolute favorite sign of hers. It is etched on her tombstone and reads, ‘End of Construction Zone . . . thank you for your patience’.
Ladies, we could all take a few tips from this wonderful woman of faith. She was married to one of the most famous and recognized preachers in the world. Yet, from what I’ve read of her life, she lived an authentic, messy life. She was transparent and quick to confess her shortcomings.
I am learning to live such a life. Wearing masks and putting on airs is exhausting and frustrating. Let’s all put up a sign or two around our homes to help us remember that we are all still under construction and need to show each other grace . . . and give a giggle or two.
Father, we thank You that You love us just as we are. We try Lord to do our best for You while we are here on this earth, but we come up short and fail often. Thank You for Your grace that extends to not only ourselves but to those around us who we may offend or find hard to love. Holy Spirit, continue to do the work in our hearts until we are called home and our time here is done. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
