God is Good ... All The Time
I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. (Psalm 27:13)
Finding things that are good isn’t always easy. Do all the research you like to find a "good" car, but you might still end up buying the "Friday afternoon" model (the one that often has various things wrong with it as workers’ minds begin to drift towards the weekend) and it might not turn out to be so good after all. And as to finding people that are good – well, that can be a nightmare! After all, appearances can be deceptive; and even the best of folk can let you down.
Thankfully, and in contrast to all this, one of the Bible’s most basic affirmations is that God is good – all the time. There’s nothing "Friday-afternoon-ish" or unreliable about Him. From start to finish, He is good through and through.
His goodness was something that the we find Old Testament prophets frequently stressing. He wasn’t like the pagan deities of all the surrounding nations, who were often vacillating in character and attitude and whom you had to take care not to upset. ("Quick! We’d better offer a sacrifice in case he wakes up in a bad mood today!"). No, the living God is good through and through, day after day, year after year; good in both nature and action. That’s why the psalmist could declare with such confidence, "You are good, and what you do is good" (Psalm 119:68). It’s why David could say, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing … Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance" (Psalm 16:2,5-6). David might have had his ups and downs in life; but, at the end of the day, he was confident that his God was a good God Who was committed to doing him only good.
God is good – all the time! And God does good – all the time! Remember – and enjoy! – His goodness today.
Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. (Psalm 116:7)
