Go Small or Go Home

When God resists us, we have big problems. The only solution? Go small!

"Samuel said, 'Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel.'" 1 Samuel 15:17, NIV

The secret to success in life: Stay small in your own eyes! Go small, or go home. When we stay little in our own estimation and avoid "getting a big head" when we have a few successes, God can actually anoint, use and promote us.

However, when pride enters into our lives, we are heading for a fall, a loss, a demotion, a slow boat to God's destiny for our lives. The Lord cannot endorse or promote pride. In fact, the Bible says that God resists the proud! How's that for hitting the big emergency brake in our lives? When God resists us…we have big problems! The only solution? Go small!

So, what's the deal with pride and why is it such a universal problem? Unfortunately, when God gives us a bit of success, we can be tempted to start believing that we are "all that" and this creates serious issues. It's a temptation we all face. If we pay attention to the red flags, we can take action and go small!

If we notice these warning signs, we need to find a way to become little in our own eyes – immediately!

Warning Signs: Showing an attitude of superiority. Speaking in condescending tones. Patronizing others. Being discontent and unwilling to serve in little things. Having a territorial attitude. Needing to toot your own horn. Becoming angry when corrected. Feeling that you are "above" certain tasks. Disregarding the "little people." Needing to always be right. Being unable to admit mistakes. Blaming others for your inadequacies. Displaying an arrogant attitude, rude behavior or ungrateful expectations. Needing to "one up" others.

Perhaps you're struggling and wondering why things are not going so well for you. Maybe you know God has gifted and anointed you, but doors are not opening up for you. Could it be a pride problem?

"'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time…" (1 Peter 5:5-6, NKJV)

Say It: "Father, I want to stay small in my own eyes. I know the best place to be is in a place of humility. Show me areas of my life where pride has crept in and help me choose to go small. I know You resist the proud but give grace to the humble – so I humble myself under Your Hand. Today, help me serve You and live this out in a way that honors Jesus. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
