God is sovereign, yet He has made us each with a free will. For example: our action in choosing to follow Christ would be impossible if God had not chosen to give us life in Christ in the first place. God gives the decisive impulse. We respond. We choose Him because He first chose us (Romans 5:8). God’s sovereignty knows no bounds. God is so sovereign, in fact, that He even takes our mistakes and works them for the greatest good. In His perfect grace He takes our past, our present, and our future and works them for His glory and our good.
God’s primary purpose is to get glory. However, He is not sadistic. He does not take pleasure in our pain in order to get glory. On the contrary, God’s goodness makes this transaction possible—the exchange of our failures and the enemy’s evil plans for something wonderful beyond our comprehension. Only an immeasurably good and perfectly capable God could work lowly things for the glory of His name. Nothing is outside His grasp or too far from His reach. Not our own failures, not the enemy’s plans, not natural disasters, or even evil dictators. If I am in Christ, my past sins are covered in the blood of Jesus, my present sins are covered in His blood, and my future sins are covered too. Even evil that is worked against me is covered in the blood of Christ so that Jesus may be supreme above all.
