Giving Thanks in the Waiting Room of Life
“Why is it taking FOREVER?”
“Why isn't it ready yet?”
“When will all this end?”
"Why can't we just get this done and over with?”
I don’t know how many times I’ve said these words. I refuse to keep count. Even as I write them down they grate on my nerves. It is impatience in your face – so to speak. It’s stressful and does little to relieve my situation.
But I do it anyway.
I know...I know... I can’t make anything happen quicker by complaining. I wish remembered that in the waiting I gain strength. I remembered now the fruit is sweeter when it's mature and ready?
How many farmers dig up their premature crop and complain because they're only sprouts?
Looking for the harvest by digging up the field too soon is crazy so why do I want to do that?
I remember the last time I heard anyone talk about the value of perseverance. Have you? I think it’s because it is one of those “ugly words” reflecting character – especially the lack of it.
It takes good character to wait until the right time. It takes excellent character to be prepared.
I honestly hate waiting. Are we there yet?
God in His infinite wisdom knows the true value of the Invisible, but real, Waiting Room of life. He gives me glimpses of it too.
I see when I touch the First Lieutenant bars of my son who was so disillusioned in kindergarten he asked me if there was anyway he could retire.
I watch the dance and laughing joy of a niece healed from violent rape and nearly murdered just because she was a woman.
I hold in the hand of a faithful sister returning to the bed of her faithless husband only to find his heart changed by the Faithful One.
I find it in the clear brown eyes of my daughter while cupping her face in my hand. She says, "I'm sorry, Mommy, for all I've put you and Dad through. I really do love you."
I know it's hard to wait, but I’m learning there is a sweet reward in the waiting.
The Sovereign is at work in the souls of men.
He weaves His plan into their hearts.
He shapes His good purposes into their minds.
He warms the oven of their hearts with His goodness.
Love abounds in the lives He calls His own.
The Creator of TIME uses time to mature us.
He sees the cherry in its bloom.
He touches the red of a green apple
He tastes the sweetness of the peach pit.
He knows the beginning from the end and feels the goodness there.
I think it's about time I trust Him.I'm sure you'll see me in the waiting room.
James 5:11 As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
“Fearful people have a hard time waiting, because when we are afraid we want to get away from where we are. Active waiting means to be fully present to the moment, in the conviction that something is happening where you are and that you want to be present to it.” – Henri Nouwen
