Give Credit Where It Is Due

Give credit and praise to God for every good thing you do today.

“Let the one who boasts, boast of the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:31 (nrsv)

I found myself being proud today. I did a good job at work. Someone praised me and I felt myself puff up with pride. I was pleased with myself and the way things turned out. I know I’m good at certain things and this certainly proved it.

But I’m singing my own praises, am I not? priding myself on a job well done? That’s a slippery slope, I know. pretty soon I’ll forget that the Lord had a hand in this and begin to think it’s all about me.

I read the headlines in self-help books about changing, taking charge, being the person I dreamed I could be. Many self-help gurus say that I’m in charge of my life, that I rise or fall as a result of my own actions. That no one has control over me but me.

But it’s not true, is it? None of this happened because of me. Without Christ, there’s nothing good that I can do. It’s all ashes. Only with Him can I really succeed. There is no one to brag about but Jesus. I must never mess with the Father’s glory or intrude or lay claim to the holy works of God.

FAITH STEP: Give credit and praise to God for everything good you do today.
