Get Real with God

Description

God's dream for your life is so big that you can't achieve it on your own. You need God’s grace, and he only gives grace to the humble. Discover how to humble yourself before God.

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (James 4:6, NIV)

Have you ever thought about the importance of a name?

The “man” Jacob wrestled with in Genesis 32 was actually God, so it’s curious that the man asked Jacob what his name was.

Obviously, God knows Jacob's name. Any time God asks you a question, it's never for his benefit; it’s for yours. He already knows the answer!

Today people often choose names because they sound nice. But in biblical times, your name was a description of your character.

“Jacob” in Hebrew originally meant “deceiver” or “manipulator”—and up to that point, Jacob had lived up to his name. First, he deceived his dad. Then he cheated his brother. And then he used and manipulated his father-in-law. Jacob had a track record of causing one heartache after another, and his name reflected that.

When God asks Jacob, "What's your name?" it is a call to confession. Jacob is owning up to years of his conniving ways. He is admitting that he is his own biggest problem.

For you to fulfill the dream that God has for your life, you have to stop making excuses for yourself. You need to stop blaming others for your faults. You’ve got to stop rationalizing your weaknesses.

James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble” (NIV).

God's dream for your life is so big, so good, so blessed, and so powerful. But you can't achieve it on your own. You need God’s grace. And God only gives grace to the humble.

What is your strongest character trait—not necessarily your best trait, but your strongest? For many of us, our strongest traits are also some of our worst traits. So it might be a little scary to think about coming clean to God about those weaknesses.

But God already knows you better than you even know yourself! Nothing will surprise him. He wants you to be real with him so you can have real change in your life—not because any of it is news to him.

God already knew Jacob’s name. He just wanted Jacob to confess his sin so God could give him his blessing.

The breakthrough in your wrestling match and the start of God’s dream for your life will come when you get real with God.

Talk It Over

What you are afraid to admit to God about yourself?

In what ways do you make excuses for your weaknesses, even the small ones?

Why is confession something you should do throughout the day and not just once a day or at certain times?

Have you trusted Jesus for your salvation?

The Bible says we can only get to heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. We cannot earn our way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to accept God’s gift and to trust Jesus, start with this prayer:

“Dear God, you have promised that if I believe in Jesus, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I submit to Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Jesus, I want to follow you and serve you. I humbly commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In your name I pray. Amen.”
