Gentle Savior

00:00

Description

The most astonishing reality of Christianity is the humility of our God.

We serve a humble God. David the King and Paul the Apostle both recognized that truth. To me, the most astonishing reality of Christianity is the humility of our God. He stooped in the Incarnation to become one of us. He was stretched out on a cross, so that he could be a substitute for us. And when we are too self-important to serve, Jesus girds himself and washes the feet of the apostles who were not willing to wash each other’s feet. King David wrote:

You have also given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand upholds me; And your gentleness [humility] makes me great. (Psalm 18:35)

Salvation is an other-centered work of God. Not only does He protect us—the shield—and not only does He hold onto us—the right hand—He is respectful about it. He is humble. What an amazing God and what an amazing salvation.

I am puzzled sometimes by Christians who go on and on about the magnificence and holiness of God. What they say is true, but that is not what startles me. When I say startles, I mean it. What startles me is that God in Christ would choose to humble himself to rescue me and you and have us as friends.
