When three men appeared to Abraham, they affirmed that in spite of the old age of Abraham and Sarah, they would be the parents of the son of the covenant promise that God had made earlier. When Sarah laughed within herself, the Lord responded, “Is anything too difficult for the Lord?”
One of the three men was the angel of the Lord, evidently a manifestation of the preincarnate Christ, since He is called the Lord. Abraham, concerned with the righteousness and justice of God, intercedes on behalf of the people of Sodom until the Lord agrees that if there are only ten righteous people there, He will not destroy the city.
