In the mid 70s I loved listening to Bette Midler’s album, “The Divine Miss M.” I played that album (those of you under 40 will need to look that word up in the dictionary) until it was practically worn out. One of my favorite songs was, “You gotta have friends.” Over the years I’ve realized that Miss M's words are true.
As you get older, solid friendships become a treasure. I’ve moved a lot over the last ten years, which can cause you to feel lonely and isolated. Therefore, I value the girlfriends God has given me over the years. I’ve noticed that in each season of life, and in each location, He has provided a variety of friends.
After Steve and I moved to The Villages, Florida, for his new job, I began asking God to bring a few Christian ladies into my life. One day I remembered that fellow writer and speaker, Carol Kent, knew someone that lived in my community. I e-mailed her and shared my request. She gave me the names of 2 women she knows who live nearby. I contacted the women and we met for coffee.
The same week I was doing a book signing with several authors at my local Barnes and Noble, and sitting next to me was a Christian writer with Thomas Nelson publishers. We began talking, and she is from the same state as the other 2 ladies I had just met; plus, she knows Carol Kent’s sister!! I knew God was up to something good.
I went from having no connections to 3 ladies in less than 2 weeks. I invited the 3 of them to join me for a meeting and now the 4 of us try to meet monthly. We were all asking God to bring mature, godly women into our lives with which we could pray, laugh and share our joys and concerns. And He did.
Last month we decided to visit Carol and personally thank her for connecting us. She and her husband made us a delicious and healthy lunch. We shared what God is doing in our lives, and it was a lovely day.
When I look at a photo we took that day, it reminds me of how God delights in giving us good gifts. And in my life, godly girlfriends are one of my favorite presents from the Heavenly Papa.
