Free Marriage Advice

Robert Noland gives helpful advice on how to up the level of your relationship with your wife.

This past Sunday, my wife and I celebrated 29 years of marriage. In this culture, there is an inherent sense of accomplishment in being able to say that; however, we are quick to point out that our marriage has survived and thrived, because we are one with and in Christ.

I want to pass on a very short and simple marriage tip today that I just realized (as I begin the 30th year), and maybe it’s better to say, had a revelation, due to my wife and I talking this weekend.

On a regular basis in our crazy communication, our wives hear us say things like...

  • “Man, I love the cheeseburgers at that restaurant.”
  • “Wow. I love their new starting quarterback.”
  • “I love Uncle Si on Duck Dynasty. He’s awesome.”
  • “Seen Brad’s new Harley? Whoa, I love it.”
  • “I love you too, honey.”

In our informal, loose connotation format, coupled with our wives’ deep emotional needs and desires, hearing the word “love” connected to all sorts of material items and random people can leave them questioning how truly intentional and sincere our “I love you’s” are toward them.

Try this . . . the next time your wife says “I love you” or you are in a setting to share your feelings, tell her, “I want you to know I am in love with you.”

You’ll be surprised how different that phrase sounds and feels, and, trust me, you will have just upped the level of your relationship with her. Don’t believe me? Try it tonight. Just see what happens.

But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love. —1 Corinthians 13:13 MSG
