Free As a Bird?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Matthew 6:26 NIV)
In my teenage years there was a popular rock song called "Freebird". I don't remember all the words, but as I recall, it spoke of a desire to be as free as a bird. We have a perception of birds that they live a life without rules. They live in complete freedom. I have often thought of the birds in my yard as I drive from my house, headed into my very structured world of commerce. Oh, I have thought, to be able to change places with them for a day.
Recently, however, I heard a bird that wasn't chirping quite so pleasantly. Apparently a cat had gotten into the bird's nest and had created one excited, and angry, momma bird. Though this bird's plan may not have been to fight off a cat that day, God had place within her an instinct to protect her babies, which she couldn't control.
It reminded me that our concept of birds is not always accurate. They aren't free! Yes, they appear to have freedom to roam among the air and trees, but are they really free? Are not birds confined to live within the boundaries which God has preordained? Can birds decide to be a cat? Can birds decide to become mammals rather than lay their eggs? Do birds have the freedom to choose NOT to fly? Can a bird decide not to fly South for the winter, or to return North in the summer, or is this decision made for them in advance...by their Creator?
As I thought of the so-called "free birds", I recognized that birds really have very little freedom...outside of what God has created them to be. Birds are birds because God said so! Birds are fed because God chooses for them not to go hungry! Birds behave like birds because that is how God created them to behave!
You and I, too, are under the Sovereignty of God. He is in control. Although today you may not feel that you are in His plan, remember that you are much more valuable to God than the birds. They are being cared for by God, and so are you! Trust Him today!
