Everyone has a bad day. Sadly bad days cannot be avoided. Jesus tried to drive that truth home to his listeners. Knowing that some in his audience were completely satisfied with their lives, he told them that storms come into everyone's life. They cannot be avoided. The person who is wonderfully happy today may be inundated with sorrows tomorrow.
47 "Everyone who comes to Me, and hears My words, and acts upon them, I will show you whom he is like:
48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when a flood rose, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
49 "But the one who has heard, and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house upon the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great." (Luke 6:47-49)
So how do we deal with the storms of life? We build our lives upon the foundation of Jesus Christ. With him as the foundation, we can survive the storm and may actually become stronger. To assume that our lives will be problem free is something that God does not guarantee. What he guarantees is that if we build our lives deeply into his love and grace, when the rains come, afterwards we will be left standing.
