In this excerpt from God's Blogs, Lanny Donoho imagines what God might say if He wrote a blog about the necessity and goodness of forgiveness.

Some of you may be thinking about how badly some of the people in your life treat you. Some of you may have thought about how terrible you feel because of how you are treated by your dad or your ex-spouse—and some of you even by your present spouse. And your thoughts may have been, “Okay, I know You made them, God, but how can I treat someone nicely who treats me so horribly…someone who abuses me so badly?”

Seeing everyone as My children and My creation is the beginning of forgiveness.

I said something in another Book a long time ago and I know it doesn’t make sense to some of you, but based on what I want you to understand, maybe I should say it again:

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

It doesn’t seem to make sense, but trust Me, it does a lot more for you than it does for your enemies…and you both need it.

I know how they treat you, and I don’t like it. I hate it, actually. But I want you to see them as I see them. The best way for Me to help you to see it is through your own children. When your children do things you don’t like, or when they do things that you and they both know are wrong, you don’t ever stop loving them, do you?

You just keep loving and praying for them… because you can’t not love them. They are your kids! You need to see those who annoy you, who mistreat you, who get on your nerves… as My children.

Don’t get Me wrong. I don’t want you to be mistreated or hurt, nor do I want you to stay near those who might be putting you in danger. Lots of My kids need help, but they are still My children. Together we will hate what they do to you. I will hold on to you during those times they treat you poorly, and I will listen as you talk to Me or pray to Me for them (your abusers…My children) and we both will love them…

And it will be hard… but you see… I AM your father and they are My children. And strange as it may sound, that makes your boss… your brother. And your wife… your sister. And that will change everything if you let it. It will change them.

And It will change you.
