Read: Numbers 14:1-15:16, Mark 14:53-72, Psalm 53:1-6 & Proverbs 11:4
Jesus stands accused by the high priest and religious leaders. People spit and yell at Him as their lies fill the air. The scene is made more disturbing by the words in Mark 14:54, “Peter followed him at a distance.” Wow. In John 12:26, Jesus says, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” Again and again, Jesus told His disciples to follow him yet Peter is playing it safe.
Jesus isn’t calling us to follow at a distance. He says we will be where He is. We should follow Him closely, but sometimes we get caught in the same trap as Peter. We find ourselves following Jesus at a distance, hoping we won’t make too big a stir among nonbelievers. We find ourselves following Jesus at a distance, not devoting time to get close to Him.
Many things can cause us to follow at a distance. Is there anything putting distance between you and Jesus? If so, turn it over to Him. “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart” and experience the blessings of following closely (Hebrews 10:22).
