Flee From Lust

When we choose to flee from lust, we are actually choosing to run directly towards God’s gift of true and holy desire.

I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. Romans 6:19

Lust can and will rule your world if you fall prey to its insidious lies. God gave us the gift of sexual desire to be shared with our spouse inside the sanctity of marriage. The evil one, though, takes that God-given desire and counterfeits it into something ugly and sinful. That counterfeited and corrupted view of sexual desire is clearly visible in today’s culture. Lust has born an entire industry that feeds on the weaknesses and the belief in these lies. That industry, pornography, isn’t difficult to find. It’s visible everywhere. In fact, it has gone prime time.

Sexual innuendos and scenes are available nearly every time you turn on the television, listen to the radio, or search the Internet. Sadly, everyone has access to pornography in today’s technologically advanced world. How do we avoid this lustful industry and its readiness to jump into our lives? How are we to evade the enemy when it is so tempting and tantalizing?

God tells us in Scripture that we are to “flee” from sexual immorality. He doesn’t tell us that we are to kind of turn away from it or just look the other way – we are to flee. That means that we are to turn 180° and run! When he tells us that we are to flee, he is telling us that we need to take the lie of lust for what it is and exchange it for the truth of his word.

Too many of us, though, think that if we flee from lust then we will be fleeing from desire itself. This is just another one of lust’s sinister lies. When we choose to flee from lust, we are actually choosing to run directly towards God’s gift of true and holy desire. God never calls us to sacrifice just for the sake of sacrificing – there is always something far greater that he wants for us beyond the sacrifice itself.

This week, when you feel the pull of lust on your sleeve, turn and flee. Don’t give lust a chance to rule your life. Instead, look to God to guide you away so that you can encounter the true and awesome desire that he wants for your life. Let God’s word be your guide and don’t fall prey to the vicious attacks of lust. Exchange the lies of lust for the truth of God.
