Fill 'Er Up
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me—(John 15:4, ESV).
Have you ever really mulled over this verse? I have, and the more I mulled, the more confused I got. If He’s ‘in’ me... then how can I be ‘in Him’?
One day I stopped and asked the Lord to give me a practical demonstration that would help us apply this verse to our lives. Ask and ye shall receive!
I dug out an old super-sized cube vase, a water pitcher and a small plastic bottle. Turning on the tap, I filled the water jug and the vase half-full (or half-empty if that’s your bend).
How fitting as He is our Living Water.
Taking the empty bottle, I pressed its bottom into the large vase of water... the resistance pushed it back out. It was amazing how hard it was to submerge the hollow container. Then, I took the pitcher of water and began to fill the bottle and it slowly sank, bobbing and floating under the surface. Any resistance was gone.
Isn’t that so much like us, ladies? Don’t we often find resistance in our time with the Lord?
But when we sit with Him for a bit, and allow the Holy Spirit to fill us … the awkward, ‘my prayers are hitting the ceiling’ or ‘the Word is just not resonating’ moment... suddenly disappears and we find connection.
Once we are filled to the measure with Him, it becomes so natural to rest in his presence. The Living Water in us... we float freely in Him... such a sweet, sweet place to be.
Heavenly Father, I thank you for this truth. Help us not to quit when we are seeking you, but to continue to press in... open to your Holy Spirit... until we are filled, Amen.
