When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting.
Jesus said, “When you fast” —not if, but when. Therefore, we need to fast. There are all types of fasting…it does not have to be fasting from food. Sometimes food is an easy item to give up and it means nothing for us to sacrifice. When you fast, it should be something you choose to give up that you will miss, that may be painful to live without —then you use that time of void to reflect back to God and pray and ask Him to fill your need.
In our culture, we should consider taking a time to fast from social media. Instead of looking at our smart phones multiple times a day to check the latest Instagram post, or FB message, or Twitter, we should fast from these things and turn our attention back to God. Social media has a way of taking over us if we do not keep guardrails up to protect us. What do we need protection from concerning social media? We need to protect our hearts from comparing our lives to other people’s lives posted on FB, Twitter and Instagram. Comparison steals our joy and sows the seeds of envy. Maybe your heart needs a break from such temptation. Maybe over the next month you should fast from social media and use that time to reflect on the blessings God has given you in your life. Use your extra time to ask God to meet your need to be noticed, approved of and even acknowledged.
There is nothing wrong with social media, just like there is nothing wrong with food, but sometimes we can allow a good thing to get out of control. Is it time to hit the pause button with social media and step away for a little bit?
I need to fast in my life, if for no other reason than because You instruct me to do so. God, show me the area in my life that I should fast from and show me how to do it. Fasting is new to me, but since Jesus himself said, “When you fast,” I know I need to do it. Give me the courage to step out in faith and follow You in this area of my life.
