Family Night Ideas: Hugs and Kisses
Hershey’s candy company: Move over! For this family night, we’re making our own giant chocolate Kiss! Here are the instructions:
Melt chocolate in a double broiler or in the microwave. Watch it carefully, and stir it occasionally. Put tin foil over the small end of a round funnel, closing it off. Spray non-stick spray into the funnel. Place the funnel into a coffee mug to hold it upright. Pour the melted chocolate in, and put into the freezer for about 45 minutes to harden. Remove the chocolate from the funnel, and wrap it in tin foil. Take a strip of white paper and write one of the following Bible verses onto it: 1 Thess. 5:11, Phil 2:3, Eph. 6:1-2. Tuck the strip of paper into the foil near the point of the chocolate kiss.
Use the chocolate kiss to peak your children’s interest, then explain that God has given us certain teachings in the Bible and He wants us to obey them. But why does God want us to follow His commandments?
Open the message and read the Scripture that you’ve written for the chocolate kiss. As you eat the chocolate, tell your kids about a time when you didn’t obey this commandment. Tell about a time when your disobedience hurt you and/or other people. Make sure you emphasize that God gives us His commandments because He doesn’t want us to be hurt. He also doesn’t want others to hurt. God gives us these commandments because He loves us. These commandments are like giant hugs and kisses from God!
Talk about your feelings of gratefulness toward God. Tell your children how grateful you are that we have a God who loves us so much that he gives us His Word to protect us from harm. Talk about how your gratefulness makes you want to obey God’s commandments. End your time in prayer, thanking God for His commandments.
Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3
