"And the apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith!' And the Lord said, 'If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and be planted in the sea; and it would obey you.'" Luke 17:5-7, NASB
The apostles were desperate for more faith, and Jesus told them to talk to a tree. What's the connection?
Our faith is more in our mouth than we realize! Notice these phrases: "…if you had faith…you would say…." Our faith goes into action when we speak! Faith is a heart-voice-activated thing – from the abundance of the heart our mouth speaks – so our faith is very much connected with what we say! If we want our faith to increase, Jesus told us to use the faith we have by speaking!
When the disciples asked Jesus to increase their faith, He DIDN'T say… "Well boys, your faith doesn't make any difference – just be passive and leave everything to Me…." He DIDN'T just say, "Well you just need to hear more of the Word because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word." He DID say to use the little bit of faith you have and start talking! Hook the faith in your heart up to the words of your mouth – talk to the "trees" and watch what happens!
It's no different today. Do you need to "get a grip" on increasing your faith in a given area of your life? If you had faith – you would say. What are you saying? Your words – which come from the abundance of your heart – reveal your faith. What do you hear yourself saying? What do you need to say? Today, if you need more faith – use the little bit you have and say!
Say This: "Jesus, I am so glad You didn't make the realm of faith complex, confusing, theological or theoretical! You have given us the ability to use the little bit of faith we have to get results. There is simplicity in Christ. Today, I will intentionally use the faith I have by speaking words – specifically Your Word – to the various 'trees' in my life. Thank You that Your power goes to work as I release my faith in You and Your Word. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
