The next three plagues of frogs, lice, and flies added to Egypt’s woes but failed to convince Pharaoh to let the children of Israel go. Once again, the magicians were able to create a paltry imitation of the plague of frogs, and once again, Pharaoh hardened his heart when the plague abated. With the plague of lice, however, the magicians themselves recognized that this was the finger of God and no enchantment. Nevertheless, Pharaoh refused to heed them just as he did after the plague of flies was removed in accordance with Moses’ promise.
Reading of Exodus 8
