In the days that followed the Exodus, the Lord provided for His people and protected them in the wilderness. Now that they had been redeemed, it was necessary that they be set apart to God in a covenant relationship and instructed in His ways so that they could become a holy people. God invited them to obey His voice and keep His covenant so that they would be a special treasure to Him above all people. When the Lord manifested Himself to the children of Israel through thunder, lightening, a thick cloud, an earthquake, and the blast of a trumpet on Mount Sinai, the people were terrified.
Reading of Exodus 19
Lord, You are holy and awesome. The powers of nature point beyond themselves to Your infinitely greater power and wonders. Let me remember that when I draw near to You, I am in the presence of a consuming fire.
