Eternal Hope That Encourages Us
Read: Job 19
A while back, I was in the hospital unexpectedly. I had been a Christian for years, but for some reason, verses and hymns just wouldn’t come to mind. What Scriptures we can speak to ourselves when we are faced with a crisis? What do we say to our families and friends in need? No one wants to hear “hang in there” when something bad happens. Even “I’m praying for you” feels over used. How often do we actually pray for the person we said that to?
Job gives us a great example of how to respond in times of trouble. Job lost his family, his wealth and his health. But regardless of his circumstances, Job remained hopeful. I believe one reason Job never lost hope is because he was great at reminding himself of the truth. In Job 19:25, he preaches the gospel in one line, “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that he will stand upon the earth.” In that one sentence Job reminds himself of God’s character, God’s sovereignty and His promise for His children. How different would our problems be if we looked at them knowing God will resolve them and redeem us?
Job offers us a fresh and an eternal perspective on hard times. If we can train our minds to place our hope in what is eternal rather than our present circumstances, we won’t be so discouraged by this life.
