Eternal Compounding Through Generosity

Giving is the way that we surrender our resources back to God.

Generosity is the engine that fuels my passion for what I do.  Having spent a lifetime committed to helping Christians understand and use their money with an eternal perspective, I have watched literally hundreds of lives changed by the power of generosity.

When we give, we open our hand to God. Giving is THE significant way that we surrender our resources back to God, for His use and for His glory. In doing so, our hearts are freed from the worship of money. In our culture, false gods are not easy to see, since they are not made of wood or stone.  However, our culture bows down to the gods of materialism, accumulation, and control. The power of all of those money-related idols is broken when we give our money for Kingdom purposes.

Two of my favorite verses are the following:

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.” I Corinthians 13:12 (NASB ) and

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21 (NKJV)

These verses speak to me about our perspective.  It’s tempting to think that we live in an ultimate reality. Our five senses bombard us with “reality,” and we feel very in tune with the world as we know it. The fact is we are not temporal beings. God made us in His image, as eternal beings. This world is not our home, and is it not safe to assume that what we see is “real.”  As we come into a deepening relationship with the Lord, we are more and more able to live by faith.  Faith allows us to believe that God’s power is greater than anything that we could imagine.  Faith allows us to believe that it really is the wisest choice to lay up our treasure in heaven. Faith allows us to hold our (God’s) money with an open hand and to seek first His Kingdom with our resources.  Having faith in God’s power, and having faith in the reality of eternity is a mighty combination that can yield dramatic results–even in the most practical of areas…our finances.

Today, I challenge you to open your hand, to give generously, and to learn to see the world from a different vantage point.

May you be encouraged as you depend on God’s wisdom for your financial choices.
