For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are- yet was without sin.
To have empathy with your child is a powerful tool for a mom. Empathy is not necessarily agreeing with the complaint, you are only agreeing with how the person is feeling. Through empathy, we have the ability to build a bridge with our child unlike anything else. When a child feels understood, they are more willing to accept correction or guidance. Many times we try to parent without ever really listening or understanding where our child is coming from in their struggle.
We learn this parenting tool from Jesus himself, because Jesus has empathy for us. When we come to Him with our struggles and our weaknesses, He truly understands because He has experienced this earth and was tempted in every way that we are tempted. It helps me connect with Him more as my Savior, knowing that He understands my struggles. The fact that Jesus was tempted and did not sin also gives me hope, because now Jesus is in me. I may not be able to withstand the temptation by myself, but Jesus can and He is in me— His power is in me. Through Jesus, I can do all things.
We lead by example. Christ is our example and we need to learn to pass that grace and love onto our children. As you go about your day, try to have empathy with your children, by realizing that Jesus has empathy for you.
Father, Thank You for sending Jesus. Thank You that Jesus experienced every aspect of my life, and yet He remained Holy and did not sin. Thank You that Jesus has complete understanding of my struggles and my weaknesses. Thank You that I have Jesus in me and through Him, the power of sin is broken. I pray I will be able to give my children this same kind of understanding and love.
