Eating Worshipfully

Description

Our eating can glorify God, especially in contrast to what the world says about women's bodies.

SO WHETHER YOU EAT OR DRINK OR WHATEVER YOU DO, DO IT ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD. — 1 CORINTHIANS 10:31

Magazines, advertisements, and television all tell the average woman that she is too much. Name a body part, and it needs slimming or toning or something. Culture shames women who don't match its youthful, slender standard. Women of all types are pushed to pursue it—for self-improvement, or even simply to look "acceptable."

As much as it's reviled, food is not wicked. God gave us food as a good gift that He intended for us to use wisely and to enjoy, not for it to rule us. Want to eat a brownie? Savor God's gift and thank Him for it. Rather snack on carrots? Do so for His glory, not guilt. Our food choices don't make us better or worse people, but how many of us have judged another woman for what she ate for lunch?

Our eating can glorify God, especially in contrast to what the world says about women's bodies. When we eat, how do we think about ourselves or others? Are we caring for our bodies with thankfulness to God or slaving after the media's idol? We are beautiful because our Creator is beautiful. As we battle with the mirror, we can turn to the One who made us, loves us dearly, and tells us so in His Word.

Let's pray:

Dear heavenly Father, help me to care for my body's needs and trust that I am beautiful in Your sight. Help me to encourage other women who struggle with this, too. Help me to love them as much as You love them. Amen.
