Dreams Come True

In a dream, God asked Solomon a million dollar question: "What do you want?" How would you respond to God's question?

Scripture: Psalm 83, 1 Chronicles 29:23-25, 2 Chronicles 1:1, 1 Kings 2:13-3:4, 2 Chronicles 1:2-6, 1 Kings 3:5-15, 2 Chronicles 1:7-13

"That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, ‘What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!’" 1 Kings 3:5 (NLT)

God asked Solomon a million dollar question, "What do you want?"  The question is loaded with possibilities, isn't it? Solomon, even in his sleep, knew what he really needed. He evaluated himself honestly. Young and inexperienced, he understood his track record in decision-making left a lot to be desired.

In a political move, he married Pharaoh's daughter. To accommodate the worship of the people, he allowed sacrifices to be made in various places. This was a 20-year-old who needed a great deal of wisdom.

Solomon demonstrated wisdom in asking for it, so God blessed him immeasurably with understanding, wealth, fame, and a long life. Wisdom was an astute thing to request, but I believe God looked at Solomon’s motive behind desiring this gift. This young king did not want wisdom so that he might gain anything for himself. He asked for it so that he might lead God's people.

We can see that God’s wisdom was poured out into Solomon through the book of Proverbs. King Solomon wrote this book full of guidance and shares about his love for wisdom over and over again.  I want to share my favorite verse from Proverbs with you. As you read this verse, reflect upon Solomon’s dream and his answer to God’s question, "What do you want?"  You’ll see why he penned Proverbs 8:35: “For whoever finds me [wisdom] finds life and receives favor from the LORD.” (NLT) Yep! This verse is a treasure!

How would you answer the million dollar question?
