Don't Waste the Wait

Do you find it difficult to wait? What step will you take today to make use of this time of waiting?

I’m waiting. I submitted a book proposal to a publishing company last year. While I was given a general time frame for when I could expect an answer, I didn’t get a hard and fast date.

You’re right if you guessed that I began checking my email more often as the days went by. I didn’t hear anything. You’d be right again if you guessed that I followed up with the publisher once the stated time frame had passed.

I was relieved to find out that my proposal hadn’t been rejected, and would soon be up for review. Time to settle in and wait a little longer.

Don't Waste the Wait; Choose to Grow

Ready, Set, Grow!

Waiting is often defined as a time when you’re doing nothing while expecting something to happen (Encarta Dictionary). I don’t think of waiting like that. Times of waiting can be wonderful opportunities for growth.

You probably agree that it would be silly for me to stop writing while I am waiting to hear from the publisher. Instead, this time of waiting has allowed me to: take a writing class (Tribe Writers), focus on launching my new website, and put together a devotional eBook (God Speaking).

Good Stuff to Gain

Whether the response from the publisher is favorable or not, I’ve gained some valuable insights while I’ve waited:

God can be trusted

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

God has proven time and again that He has things under control. Waiting gives me the opportunity to put things into His hands and let Him orchestrate the details. Exercising my faith helps it to grow.

He’s given me this waiting period to prepare for what lies ahead

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Luke 14:28

It’s wonderful to have the desire to write a book. But I’d be fooling myself if I didn’t consider the fact that it takes a significant investment of time and energy. There will be things I’ll have to give up in order to achieve my goal. Periods of waiting have helped me remain realistic.

He has a plan for me that’s far better than anything I can dream up

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

Before time began, God planned out specific good works for me to do. Times of waiting allow me to seek Him and determine the next step He wants me to take.

Although I appreciate immediate answers, I can honestly say that times of waiting have proven to be the growth-producers.

Your Turn

So what are you waiting for? A promotion? A vacation? A spouse? Waiting can be difficult – but the wait doesn’t have to be wasted!

Do you find it difficult to wait? What step will you take today to make use of this time of waiting?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the time between the ask and the answer. Forgive me for not trusting You with my circumstances. Help me choose to see the waiting period as an opportunity for growth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
