Don't Forget the Holy Spirit Has Feelings
People's feelings are sometimes easily hurt. Even the Holy Spirit can have emotions that hurt him. How can we hurt the Spirit? He is God. Can God be hurt? The answer that Paul gave is yes. We hurt the Holy Spirit when we have unhealthy relationships with other believers.
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:30-32).
The word grieve means to feel pain or depression. It is the same word for the pain that Jesus experienced in the Garden the night before his crucifixion. When we are bitter and angry with one another, it is the Garden of Gethsemane experience for the Holy Spirit who is living within our hearts. The unity that he wants to establish among believers is broken and he feels pain over it. We can be kind to the Spirit by being kind and forgiving to one another. We need to feel his pain.
