Don't Be Afraid; You Can't Go Wrong
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. —Proverbs3:24 (niv)
Even before I decided I wanted to be a lawyer, I fell in love with Yale Law School, which is famous for essentially having no grades, a supportive, collegial atmosphere, and letting students follow their own paths. It’s no wonder some of the more remarkable graduates work on international human rights or even become president. Yale was truly my dream school.
So you can imagine what a marvelous early Christmas present it was when I got the call from the Yale admissions office offering me a place in the class. But since I’m crazy sometimes and can’t just accept the wonder of the life God gave me, my happiness didn’t last long. Soon after, another law school offered me a full-tuition scholarship. I’d have to take out many times more money in loans to attend Yale.
Yes, it was a significant and difficult decision to make, but I turned it into an excuse to worry. I talked about it with my fiancee, Emily, and my parents. I woke up nights in a cold sweat, imagining all the money I would lose if I followed my heart and went to Yale.
As I went through the conversation one more time with Emily, she said, “Don’t be afraid. You can’t go wrong.” Yes, life was incredibly good and there was no wrong choice.
