Does God Hear This From You?
You received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Romans 8:15-16 (NIV)
Here is the affectionate cry of a son or daughter who knows he or she is loved. Does God hear this from you?
John Owen says, “The greatest sorrow and burden that you can lay on the Father, the greatest unkindness you can do to him is…” How would you answer this? Some scandalous sin? Owen says, “The greatest unkindness is… not to believe that he loves you.”
It’s as if the Father said to you, “How else could I show my love for you? What else could I do? I sent my Only Son to the cross to bring you into my love.”
It’s as if the Son said to you, “I left heaven and came down into the world for you. My back was scourged for you. I laid down my life for you, willingly, to rescue you and make you my own.”
It’s as if the Holy Spirit said to you, “I’ve come into your life and remained with you through all your doubts and sins. I’ve often been grieved, but I’ve never left you and I never will.”
If this is true of you today, it’s time for you to say to God today, “I’m so sorry, Lord. You’ve poured out love beyond measure, while I’ve grieved you. I’ve burdened you. I’ve laid this great unkindness on you. I haven’t believed that you love me. But today I believe the gospel. Thank you for your amazing love, shown by Christ on the cross and poured into my life by the Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit will convince you of God’s love for you as you believe the gospel.
Are you willing to do this today?
