Do You Shine?
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. For those who lived in a land of deep shadows—light! sunbursts of light!” Isaiah 9:2 (msg)
I accepted Jesus into my heart as a little child—I was maybe five or six years old. I remember the day clearly: going into my room after a particularly compelling Sunday school message, praying on my knees and then opening the door of my room to find the hallway of our little suburban ranch house flooded with light. I remember walking to the living room, where the brightest sunlight I’d ever seen was streaming through the picture windows, filling the room—and my freshly redeemed soul—with light.
I don’t know that casual observers would think that I had “walked in darkness” in my preschool years, before I made a decision for Christ. And yet the Bible says all have sinned. All. Even little kids. I knew what sin was, even as a child. I knew the times I’d lied or been naughty. My mother will attest I was a little sinner, even then. As we all are.
But these words about Jesus, penned centuries before His birth, remind us that although we all live in the shadows, and walk in the dark, we can come into the light. And then, the Bible says, we are to take that light to others. As Jesus’ followers, we’re meant to shine, so that others can find their way out of the dark.
The question is, Do I shine? Or do I mostly complain? Do I bring light, or merely find fault? Does my ability to trust Jesus draw others toward Him, or does my fear and negativity push them away? I want to be a light, but sometimes, my whining is the bushel basket I put over my own light.
FAITH STEP: Would people who know you describe you as someone who brings Jesus’ light? Ask Jesus to show you where you can shine more brightly.
