Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Doing good sounds like such an easy thing to do. “Of course I’m a good person. Of course I do kind things for people everyday," is what we tell ourselves. And, what we tell ourselves is true- we do good things for our family and friends all the time. It is natural for us to be kind to those that we love. But, Paul challenges us in Galatians to take opportunities to do good for ALL people. “All” people include strangers at the grocery story, people pumping gas at the gas station, people driving next to me on the highway, my neighbor, talking to my cell phone carrier when my bill is not right. God gives us opportunities everyday to reach out to people and show kindness. I can give the cashier at the grocery store a smile and a greeting, instead of staring past her only thinking of what I’m going to make for dinner. I can let the person, coming into my lane of traffic, merge...and give them a smile. Little acts of kindness throughout my day add up to “doing good” to the people around me.
Be creative. Have you ever paid for a cup of coffee for the car behind you in the drive through at your local coffee shop? That is a nice gesture, a random act of kindness. Today, go throughout your day thinking, “who could I bless today?” You might be surprised how much you are blessed by these good deeds and how contagious they will become in your life.
Father, Remind me throughout my day to do good deeds and to be kind. God, I get so busy in my life, rushing from here to there, I forget that the people I am surrounded by all day have lives too and they just might need a simple smile and a "Good morning!” Open my eyes to see the people in my world that seem to be invisible to me right now.
