Discover the Bible

Description

Are there passages in the Bible you’ve avoided reading because they seem complex and difficult? Ask Jesus to speak to you and to show you Himself within those pages.

Then Jesus said to them, "You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?" Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:25–27, NLT

As a newlywed, I had a chance to attend Bible-school courses through my church. The classes started with a test to see our overall understanding of the Bible. I failed miserably.

Even though I attended church for most of my childhood, I had little understanding of the Bible. Yes, I could tell you that David killed Goliath with a stone and a sling. Yes, I could name most of the Ten Commandments, but the big picture of God’s plan and how the Old Testament related to the New Testament was beyond my grasp.

Once Bible classes started, our first assignment was to read every book of the Bible and write a one-page summary of what each book was about. We weren’t supposed to use commentaries or study notes. Instead we were supposed to let God’s Word speak for itself. Before reading, I’d pray and ask Jesus to give me insight, and He did.

Just like Jesus explained Himself to the men walking the road to Emmaus in Luke 24, He wants to explain Himself to each of us. The writings of Moses and all the prophets may seem overwhelming, but if we go to Jesus in prayer before we read He will show up and speak to our hearts.

The more I read the Bible and learn, the more I want to know. Not because I enjoy knowing things such as that Methuselah was the oldest man in the Bible at 969 years or that Noah used gopher wood to make the ark, but because it’s a special moment when the Spirit of Jesus reveals truth to me in ways I hadn’t known it before.

FAITH STEP: Are there books in the Bible you’ve avoided reading because they seem complex and difficult? Sit with your Bible and read one or two chapters from that book. Ask Jesus to speak to you and show you Himself within those pages.
