Discontentment

Description

Are you satisfied or yearning for more? True satisfaction comes from contentment with God.

“Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked.”
(Psalm 37:16 NIV)

One of the primary symptoms of discontentment is that you’re unable to experience peace living on what God has provided. You’re restless, you feel that you have a void inside, and it seems you’re always yearning for more.

In addition, discontentment causes you to make poor financial decisions. You buy into the philosophy that you always need more, better, faster things. You compare the things you have to the things you could have. Therefore, what you currently have is never good enough.

But more money and more things will never bring you satisfaction. “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 5:10 NIV).

It’s not wrong to have nice things, but you need to remember that true satisfaction comes from contentment with God.

Psalm 118:1 tells us, “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever” (NIV). Before you start your day, verbalize your contentment to God in a brief prayer thanking Him for everything in your life and for being with you no matter what.

This is not about denying the reality of life and trying to cover it up with a positive attitude. It’s about living the truth of God’s presence in your life.

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:4-7 NIV).
